As registrations begin to roll in for the 2017 North Shore Challenge, there have been many questions about our newest addition: The Team Challenge. Hopefully, this primer can help to clear a few things up.
- What is it?
The Team Challenge is an opportunity for swimmers to use their swim community to help them reach their goals. While it was designed to encourage age group clubs and Masters groups to join in the Challenge, anyone can put together a team. It does not have to be a formal team – you and a few of your #swimbuddies can put together a team quite easily.
- What does it involve?
To take part in the Team Challenge, you don’t have to do anything different than what you’d be doing as an individual swimmer. It doesn’t cost any more than an individual entry to the North Shore Challenge, either. Once you create or join a team, you can use your team and individual fundraiser link to ask friends and family to sponsor you on social media or via email (or not – it is not necessary to fundraise to be a part of the Team Challenge… but it helps!). Every dollar you raise for Camp Trillium will count as a Team Challenge Point.
Then, on race day, swim your race. Your results, along with the results of your teammates, will earn you additional Team Challenge points.
The team with the most Team Challenge points per swimmer will be awarded the first ever Team Challenge Trophy!
- How do I create or join a team?
The easiest way to do this is to join a team when you register at http://northshorechallenge.ca . Our registration page is divided into three sections; to join a team, you need to scroll down to the second section, which looks like this:
Next, select the race you plan on swimming, and scroll to the bottom of the page to click continue. You will then be prompted to choose a team from our drop-down menu. Many clubs connected to the North Shore Challenge have pages already made, so you will probably find your team listed. It will look like this:
If you find your team on the list, simply click “Join”, and you will be placed on your team! Complete the remainder of the registration, and then start training!
If your team is NOT listed, you will need to create a team. This can be done by going back to the first page of registration, and select your event from the third section of the initial registration page, “Create a Team”:
Once you pick your event, you will be prompted to create a team name. Just add the team name that your teammates will recognize, and then complete the rest of the registration as normal. Your team will be added to our team list! Also, as the team captain, you will be able to edit and personalize your team’s fundraising page! Here is what the North Shore Swimmers page looks like:
4. Why do I want to be a part of the Team Challenge?
A few reasons, really. First of all, bragging rights. Because of how we have structured the Challenge, the size of your team won’t matter. A gang of three or four friends has just as good a chance to win as a swim team with 50 team members competing. Any team could be the first ever Team Challenge winners! Second of all, because you get a trophy! You even get to bring it home with you! All we ask is that you return the trophy when you return to defend your title in 2018. Thirdly, because being a part of a team is always more fun than training alone. Your teammates can help to motivate you, and vice versa. Finally, it helps raise even more money for Camp Trillium. Since every dollar your team raises earns you Team Points, Team members are encouraged to fundraise as much as possible! And if you don’t want to raise money beyond your registration, that is okay, too. It just means you have to swim really fast on race day!
5. How do the points work, exactly?
The first part of our points formula is straightforward. If you raise $100, you earn 100 Team points for your team.
The second part of your points comes on race day. Those of you who have swum Global Swim Series races before will be familiar with GSS points. Whenever you swim a GSS event, you earn 50 points just for racing (and finishing). You can earn up to an additional 50 points, depending on where you place in your event. For example, if there are 100 swimmers in your division, and you place 10th out of 100, you earn an additional 45 points (because of the 90 people behind you). So, overall, you would have earned 95 GSS points. These points also go toward your Team Challenge total.
After the race, we will add all the team points together. In the example here, you would have earned 195 Team Challenge points (100 from fundraising, plus 95 from your race). This would be added to the rest of your team. Finally, we will calculate a Team Score, so that small teams have just as much a chance as big teams. Let’s assume you had five swimmers on your team. Your 195 points combines with theirs for a team total of, let’s say, 675 points. Your Team Score would be 135. (675 total points / 5 swimmers = 135 Team Score.) Not bad!
6. One Last Thing…
